What is SCARE For A Cure?

We are a registered non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization of volunteers who raise money for cancer-related charities. Our primary fund raiser is an annual haunted house. SCARE consists of dedicated volunteers who have banded together from legendary Austin haunts Britannia Manor, Haunted Trails at Wild Basin and community members. Our founder, Jarrett Crippen, also is known as "The Defuser," winner of the SciFi channel's "Who Wants to be a Superhero?" reality show.

How can I find out more about SCARE For A Cure?

Explore this web site for more information, or email us at scareforacure@austin.rr.com.

How much do tickets cost?

$20 for adults, $15 for students (come prepared to show your student ID at the gate), or $25 for special Red-Level (extreme) admission.

All net proceeds go directly to our selected charity. Tickets will be available online or at the door—watch the tickets page for details.

Is this a charity? Who does SCARE benefit?

Each year, SCARE benefits a different cancer-related charity. In 2008, our net proceeds will benefit a college scholarship program for high school students who have been affected by cancer.

Who do I contact to volunteer or act?

Acting and Technical: scareforacure@austin.rr.com

Talent (High School Students): Nan Cameron – cameron_nan@yahoo.com

Can I be an actor or a "booscare"?

Sure, but it involves a commitment. You must commit to work at least 4 hours during build, 4 hours during strike and to being at the haunt Halloween night! If you have a major role, you must commit to acting on all run nights!

I only have a little time, but really want to be involved—can I help?

Absolutely! We have many, many opportunities that do not require a large commitment of time. We need publicists, photographers, carpenters, painters, electricians, seamstresses, make-up artists, cooks, fund raisers, people to build, run and strike the show as well as actors. Contact us at scareforacure@austin.rr.com and tell us what you can do!

I'm only 12. Can I be an actor?

Indeed, you can. We'll want your parents to talk to us about how things will work.

Can I get credit for my volunteer hours?

Yes! School credits, community service, etc. ... just bring your paperwork and we'll sign your hours.

What do I need to tell my parents if I am younger than 17?

Your parents need to know that, on run nights, you may be needed on site up to 1-1/2 hours before we open, and for up to two hours after we let the last patron in, because it takes patrons at least a half hour to go through the haunt.

Can I get a ride to SCARE?

You need to arrange for your own transportation. Carpooling is excellent.

How can I get my organization involved?

Visit our Sponsorships page or contact us at scareforacure@austin.rr.com.

Where should crew members park?

On build days you can usually park in the Elks Lodge parking lot, 700 Dawson. On run nights, please park around the corner at Bicycle Sport Shop, 517 S. Lamar Blvd. (just south of Barton Springs) or Jack & Adam's Bicycle Shop, 1210 Barton Springs Rd. (next to Jack In The Box). If you have coolers, costumes, etc. to carry, please drop them off at the Lodge and then move your car to one of the offsite parking locations to leave space for SCARE guests and Lodge members. Ask around after the event closes for the evening and someone will probably be able to give you a ride or escort back to your car.

What is the theme of the haunt this year?

You've PLAYED video games, but have you ever LIVED one? Dunstan Games has announced their new immersive virtual reality gaming system. A limited number of lucky people will experience this groundbreaking system at a very special Beta demo preview.

Where do I park?

In the Elks' parking lot, 700 Dawson.

Is SCARE dangerous?

For Volunteers: Hmmmm... are you careful when using tools? Do you wear shoes in work areas? Do you walk into walls or trees? We have several people who are trained in first aid on the premises as well as a first aid kit. You will be supervised while working.

For Participants: Are you claustrophobic or afraid of the dark? Are you easily frightened? SCARE is an extreme haunted house, and participants can expect to walk, run, crawl, get dirty, etc. Emergency personnel will be available on the premises during run hours. You will be guided through the haunt, and your guide will assist you if you need help for any reason.

Will I be touched during the haunted house?

Guests may be touched. Actors... probably not.

I'm brave—give me all you've got!

Feeling brave? Consider purchasing Red-Level Tickets. This experience will be more extreme, more physically challenging, more intense, and much more fun for those who are ready for the extra challenge.

Get me out of here! What if I'm too scared to keep going?

SCARE is an extreme haunted house, and occasionally participants (of all ages) decide they've had enough! If at any point you are unable to continue for any reason, tell a crew member and you will be safely escorted to the gate immediately.

Are you nervous? Take out a little insurance by asking for Green-Level Tickets at the gate. You'll be given a green talisman that designates your group as a Green Group. You can always enter the haunt as a regular group and activate your protective Green powers if it all gets to be too much.

What about food and drinks? Will meals be provided for volunteers?

There will be a meal provided at every regular scheduled work day, usually around 2:00 pm. Please bring $3-5 to help offset the cost of providing food to volunteers. SCARE provides water and sports drinks during work and strike days and will provide dinner on run nights.

What if I forget/don't have any money?

Please eat anyway. We need our crew to be well fed and hydrated. You can bring money later, or help support volunteers meals in other ways.

What should I wear to work days?

Comfortable clothes appropriate for working outdoors and sturdy closed-toed shoes. We know it's hot, but there may be poison ivy or poison oak in some areas on the property, so we suggest wearing long pants rather than shorts. There will be many opportunities to brush up against wet paint, fake blood, and other substances that don't wash out easily; we recommend clothes you don't mind getting a little paint on.

What should I wear to the haunt?

SCARE is an extreme haunted house, and participants can expect to walk, run, crawl, get dirty, etc. We suggest wearing comfortable clothes and shoes appropriate for these activities.

Can I bring my kids?

We admit children, but please be aware that we regularly have adults who elect to leave before completing the haunted house due to the intense nature of the experience. SCARE is an extreme haunted house, and is not suitable for most children under 12. Please use your best judgment with regard to your child's ability to handle an extreme haunt.

If you have children with you, please consider requesting Green-Level Tickets at the gate, and remember that you can always ask to leave before you finish the haunt if the experience turns out to be too intense for your child (or anyone else in your party!).

What should I bring to work days?

You should always bring $3-5 or something to eat, a water bottle, work gloves, sunscreen, and a hat. Bring your creativity and be prepared to sweat!

Does SCARE recycle?

Yes! We recycle glass and plastic as well as building materials.

What if I can't make it to a build day?

If you said you'd work on a specific project, please try to email the Volunteer Wrangler, Nan Cameron (cameron_nan@yahoo.com). If you were planning to show up but did not have a specific project to work on, we hope to see you next time.

Do I have to sign up for work days?

No! Just show up, and we'll put you to work. We'd love it if you could drop us a note and let us know you're coming so we'll know how many volunteers we need to feed, but "drop-in" volunteers are always welcome.
