Calling all volunteers: Operation Help Florence’s Comfort House set for June 20
| What: | Operation HELP Florence’s Comfort House |
|---|---|
| When: | Sunday June 20, 10am – 5pm (lunch served at 1pm) |
| Where: | 515 Kemp Street, Austin, TX |
| Why: | A Darn Good Cause! |
Board members from SCARE for a CURE recently had the honor of meeting Florence Ponziano, the founder of Florence’s Comfort House. We were incredibly impressed with her drive and dedication to the children of the Montopolis neighborhood.
Flo, as she likes to be called, has opened her home and her property to the disadvantaged children in Montopolis as a safe place to go after school. Kids can get their clothes washed, eat a hot meal, work in a garden, create art, work on homework and even play with some ducks. Young mothers often show up to get extra diapers, bottles or blankets, which Flo does her best to keep in stock. Flo herself is the child of a drug addict, and remembers not having a safe place to go after school.
Flo’s House needs some serious TLC if she is to continue to provide a safe and clean environment for the children of the Montopolis neighborhood. Some basic home repairs and a couple of major projects need to be completed, but there are other, smaller projects as well—a garden in need of landscaping, a swing chain that needs replacing, trim that could use a coat of paint and so on. I thought that with three or four people we could fix a few of her problems… but if we could get 20-30 folks together we could really make a difference for Flo and the hundreds of kids who pass through her home every month!
SCARE for a CURE will provide the needed materials and tools, but we need some PEOPLE POWER. I hope to see you out there this Sunday! Wear good work shoes and bring some gloves if you have them. SCARE for a CURE will provide lunch, snacks, music, sunscreen, water and Gatorade.
Thank you everyone for your attention and support!

Medieval Macabre
The Curtain Theater
Friday and Saturday evenings, 9 p.m.: September 25-26, October 2-3, and October 9
On a stormy night in mid 1600′s England, we find two travelers caught away from home. They seek refuge at a country estate on their way to London, where they meet a gracious host who offers them shelter for the night. During the course of the evening, a challenge is issued between the men with a sum to be settled upon the victor. The wager: Can literature be frightening?
This fast paced play will take you on a visual trip through time, exploring plays, stories, poetry and music. Our goal is to entertain you, scare you, and show you that—although it might have been written by some old crusty dead guys who talk funny—it can still send a chill up your spine!
SCARE volunteers get 2 for 1 tickets at the door on October 3!
Tickets may be purchased on line via www.Austix.com or at the door (Cash Only)
Ticket Costs: General Admission $13, Students $9, Seniors over 65 $9, ACoT Members $9

SCARE for a CURE is an Austin-based nonprofit organization that raises money for local cancer charities, “one SCREAM at a time!” Born out of the ashes of legendary haunts: Richard Garriott’s Britannia Manor and Haunted Trails, and raised from the infamous backyard haunt of local celebrity Jarrett Crippen, a.k.a. “The Defuser” (Sci-Fi Channel), each year we produce Austin’s only extreme, full contact, interactive haunted house adventure.
About Blood Ritual
Blood Ritual is not your typical haunt. We are a story-driven, theatrical horror experience presented across 26 stages. The guests are immersed into an adventure like no other and will find themselves having to run, crawl, duck and climb their way through a maze of demons, abominations, vampires, gore and other unspeakable evils. Their ultimate goal is survival. Ours is to stop them. One thing for sure is that there will be blood.

Author invites The Defuser to help raise funds for SCARE
Attention, Defuser fans! Author Joyce Schwarz has invited The Defuser to join her in turning a reading from her book The Vision Board: The Secret to an Extraordinary Life into a benefit for SCARE For A Cure. The book shows readers how to create change for themselves by creating “vision boards” to focus their goals and ambitions. In 2008, Joyce and her staff artist Annie Kaycora created a “gratitude board” to help SCARE For A Cure honor the volunteers who make its work possible.
The reading, part of the SXSW Interactive Festival at South By Southwest, will take place on Thursday, March 13 at 5 p.m. Email thevisionboard@aol.comfor details.
