Jarrett Crippen
President and Founder
Jarrett Crippen was born and raised in Austin, Texas where he still
lives with his wife and family. At the age of 23, Jarrett
became an Austin Police officer. After 9 years spent on patrol,
he was promoted the rank of Detective and was assigned as
a criminal investigator for the next 5 yrs. In 2006, Jarrett
followed his dream of teaching and became an instructor at
the Austin Police Academy teaching cadets, officers and members
of the public. Jarrett has completed numerous schools and
seminars on leadership and communication skills including
the West Point Leadership Academy and Say It Loud; a public
speaking certification seminar.
In 2007, Jarrett and his wife; Norma founded SCARE For A CURE, a
non-profit corporation that each year holds a haunted house in Austin, Texas to raise
money for cancer related charities. SCARE 2007 raised over $10,000 for
breast cancer research and recovery and logged over 3880 volunteer hours
from over 200 volunteers, including many Austin area high school students.
Also in 2007, Jarrett—a self proclaimed comic book geek—auditioned
for and was selected out of 3400 contestants to be a cast member of Stan
Lee’s “Who Wants to be a Superhero”, a reality show on the
SciFi Channel. In September of that same year, Jarrett won the contest and was
proclaimed the world’s next great superhero!
Jarrett now spends his time with his family, preparing for SCARE 2008, and
his activities related to being a real life superhero. He routinely
travels to cities around the country to appear as “The Defuser,”
but his favorite stops are Austin area elementary schools, Boy/Girl Scout
events and church groups. Jarrett’s passions include public speaking
and story telling. He is always looking for ways to educate children about
how to be heroes in their own communities as well as raise money for local
worthy causes.

students the magical world of theatre production, scenic and lighting
design and speech communication. While a school administrator, she
introduced FAB-Core (Fine Arts-Based Core Curriculum), an exciting
program that successfully challenged students to excel academically, to
expand their creative and intellectual horizons and to stay in school.
As resident director, scenic/lighting designer as well as business manager
of Austin’s first dinner theatre, Theatre Unlimited, Nan made lifelong
friends in the professional theatre and film industries. She also thrives
in the Austin music and belly dance scenes.
Nan is a passionate SCARE volunteer, an ardent political activist and a
spokesperson for breast cancer awareness and environmental issues, all of
which keep her on the move in Austin when she’s not traveling the world.
As she says, “I’m never happier than when I have an airline ticket in my
hand. I’m like the proverbial dog: Open the door and I’ll hop right in.
It doesn’t matter where we’re going ... or the mode of
transportation ... plane, boat, train, bus or camel.” Her favorite international travel
destinations are Africa, particularly Morocco and Egypt, Southeast Asia,
India, New Zealand, Australia, Easter Island, French Polynesia, Italy and
France. She says that when she’s too old to tote a backpack to weird and
wonderful places, she’ll further explore her breath-taking and beloved
homeland, the USA.
